The Debating Society of Loreto College aligns with the words of Emily Dickinson when she said, "I know nothing in the world that has as much power as a word." It is one of the earliest and most distinguished societies, producing many eloquent speakers. The society organises training sessions and workshops to foster critical thinking, public speaking, and intellectual engagement among its members. We provide a platform for students to participate in a healthy discourse on various topics. Both intra- and inter-college debate competitions and discussions are held regularly during the academic year. The Debating Society of Loreto College has the distinct honour of inaugurating the college's annual fest, SAMAGAM, with a remarkable and intellectually invigorating event - Damayanti Shield Debate. The shield was instituted in memory of the late Damayanti Sabherwal, a student of the college, by her family. The Debating Society also organises an elocution contest during SAMAGAM. Furthermore, the society had organised the first of its kind - Vivaad, an Inter-College National Level Debate, in 2022; which witnessed participation from 15 prominent colleges from across the nation. This groundbreaking event stands as a milestone in the society's history, reflecting its dedication to expanding the scope of intellectual discourse on a national scale. Additionally, the Debating Society sends its members as representatives to a number of competitive events organised by other educational institutions. Demonstrating the Society's unbreakable commitment to Loreto College, it has not only hosted prestigious events of its own but also achieved great success, bringing back laurels for Loreto College from external competitions. Members of this society have participated in prestigious state and national level debates including ones organised by the Calcutta Debating Circle and National Youth Conclave.
