Career Options in the Social Sector

On November 13, 2024, the Placement Cell of Loreto College hosted an insightful event titled “Career Options in the Social Sector.” The speaker for the session was Ms. Riiei Maia Khongwir, Branding, Partnership and Sourcing Manager, Teach for India. The session aimed to equip students with the knowledge of evolving landscapes in the social sector, emphasising its increasing relevance in the context of global challenges.

Ms. Riiei began with an introduction to the social sector, explaining its various components and different types of organisations. Her emphasis was on the “diversification of career opportunities” within the social sector and the growing demand for professionals with specialised skills—both technical and interpersonal. She highlighted the emerging career options that allow individuals to influence legislation and advocate for marginalised communities.

A significant portion of the discussion focused on the importance of networking and building relationships in the social sector, as well as the need for adaptability and the willingness to learn. Ms. Riiei explained the value of internships, fellowships, and gaining experience through volunteer work, ultimately encouraging attendees to explore the diverse range of possibilities. She outlined various employment avenues, including community management, public policies, social entrepreneurship, and project management. She also elaborated on the latest trends and best practices for the benefit of students preparing to enter the workforce.

Ms. Riiei’s deliberation included success stories of individuals who had transitioned into the social sector from various backgrounds, illustrating that passion for social change can come from any field. The importance of interdisciplinary approaches was underscored, with many roles requiring collaboration across multiple sectors—combining knowledge from business, technology, and the social sciences. Moreover, she addressed the significance of impact measurement in driving effective social initiatives.

The session not only illuminated the vast array of career opportunities available in the social sector but also inspired attendees to consider how their unique skills and interests could contribute to creating a positive impact in society. The overall message was clear: a career in the social sector is not just a job; it is an opportunity to make a difference in the world.
