Book discussion on Shalome Rides a Royal Elephant

On February 8, 2024, the Department of History and the History Society of Loreto College, Kolkata hosted noted author, activist, and feminist Dr. Jael Silliman for a discussion on her latest book, Shalome Rides a Royal Elephant. The discussion was moderated by Ms. Anuradha Chatterji. The session was attended by the Semester I History and English Major students of Loreto College as well as students and teachers of Loreto House, Loreto Day School Dharamtala, and Jewish Girls’ School. The book traces the story of Shalome Cohen, the first Jew to come to Kolkata (then Calcutta), who went on to become one of the pillars of the community in the city. The story of Shalome Cohen and his travels is woven through the eyes of a fictional monkey named Chanchal who travels all over India with Shalome. Dr. Silliman read excerpts from her book, which led to a lively interaction between the students and the author. The students wanted to know more about the Jewish community in Kolkata, their beliefs and practices, and why the author chose a monkey as the narrator of the story. The students were greatly inspired by Dr. Silliman’s engaging and eloquent presentation.
