OKTOFEST: A Carnival of Lights

On October 11, 2023, Oktofest, a cultural programme ushering in the spirit of October festivity, was organized by the Cine Society in collaboration with the Eastern Cultural Society of Loreto College, Kolkata. It was an inter-departmental dance and music competition divided into two segments. Students from all the three undergraduate batches and all the eight departments of the college took part in the event. After the lighting of the lamp by the Principal, Sr. Dr. Christine Coutinho, and all the judges, the Cine Society started the proceedings by introducing the programme to the audience. This was followed by an opening prayer offered by the Eastern Cultural Society.

The performances in the dance segment incorporated various dance forms that showcased the rich cultural heritage and traditions of India and its diverse festivals, such as Durga Puja, Navratri, Bhaidooj, Dussehra, Diwali, and Chhath Puja. The packed college auditorium was witness to these mesmerizing performances that were ably judged by Mr. Nilavo Roy and Ms. Prayrona Biswas. The music segment judged by Dr. Anindita Bandopadhyay and Dr. Subhasree Basu was an equal delight as the mellifluous voices of the participants captivated the audience. The event ended with words of encouragement from the judges, followed by the declaration of the results of the competition. The Department of Education emerged as the winners of the dance segment, while the Department of Geography won in the music category. The Department of English was awarded the title of the best department of Loreto College.
