World Environment Day Celebration at Biswa Bangla Convention Centre
On the occasion of the World Environment Day, the West Bengal Pollution Control Board had organised a programme to join in on the worldwide celebration and highlight various issues based on this year's theme - 'Beat Plastic Pollution' as adopted by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) at Biswa Bangla Convention Centre on June 5, 2023. The programme started after 11:30a.m. with the speeches of various eminent dignitaries, such as — the Minister in Charge of the Department of Environment and Water Resource Management; the Principal Secretary of the Department of Environment and Consumer Affairs; the Chairperson of the West Bengal Pollution Control Board; the Principal Director of the Institute of Environmental Studies and Wetland Management; the Chairperson of the West Bengal Biodiversity Board; and the Member Secretary of the West Bengal Pollution Control Board.
The second session of the programme began after lunch. Quizzes were conducted at 2 different levels for schools and colleges respectively. There were 10 college/university teams which participated, namely — Presidency University, Asutosh College, East Calcutta Girls' College, Vivekananda College for Women, Lady Brabourne, Derozio Memorial College, Calcutta University Department of Environment, Sarsuna College and Basanti Devi College. A team of 3 girls represented Loreto College for the event. The programme was a learning experience for all the participants.
