Awareness campaign on Innovative Ways to Conserve Water

The National Service Scheme (NSS) Society and the Department of B.Ed. of Loreto College conducted an awareness campaign on “Innovative Ways to Conserve Water” at Bal Shiksha Sadan, a co-educational primary school in Kolkata. The campaign, entitled “Sustain the blue by saving the green,” was carried out on two occasions: March 27, 2023 and April 26, 2023. The goal of this awareness campaign was to educate the students of the school on the value of water and life on Earth. It was also an effort to commemorate World Water Day (March 24) and World Earth Day (April 22).
During the first session on March 27, the volunteers explained the significance of water and the dos and don’ts of water conservation with charts and other visual aids. Four poems were recited in English, Hindi, and Bengali, with translations provided when necessary. A drawing competition on the theme “Save Water” was then organized for the students of the school, and the winners received simple prizes. This was followed by a collective pledge to conserve water.
The campaign on April 26 was organized by the Geography students of the Department of B.Ed. The day commenced with a prayer, after which the pupils of the school shared the impact of the previous session on them. They responded enthusiastically when asked about their efforts to save water in the interim period. The volunteers proceeded to discuss the various kinds of water resources, their uses, and the reasons behind the rapid depletion of the Earth’s water supply. This further impressed upon the children the urgent need for water conservation. The practice of rainwater harvesting was then introduced to the students, and a model was used to demonstrate how rainwater may be collected and subsequently utilized. The volunteers conducted multiple engaging activities to test the understanding of the pupils. They were also taught the Hindi action song “Jal hi Jeevan,” which they particularly enjoyed. At the end of the session, the children reaffirmed their commitment to plant trees and conserve water in their daily lives to promote the creation of a green and sustainable environment.
