Gender Dynamics in Disaster Risk and Resilience
Women’s Studies Society of the college had organized a Panel discussion on Gender Dynamics in Disaster Risk and Resilience on October 5, 2021. The programme was conducted over Google Meet. The panelists were Prof. Subhadra Channa, now retired faculty of the Department of Anthropology, Delhi University and Dr. Sunita Reddy, Associate Professor, Centre of Social Medicine and Community Health, School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University. The panel was moderated by Ranjana Ray, Professor Emeritus, Department of Anthropology, University of Calcutta. The session highlighted the various aspects of disasters in the rural, urban context, and the inherent gender-gaps in risk, resilience, redressal systems and conditions around the social functions of gender. The panelists put forward their opinions and views with cogent examples and it was well-underpinned by the moderator. The question-answer session at the end was bright with enthusiastic interaction between the speakers and the audience. The Women’s Studies Society plans to do multiple such short panel discussions in future, that can focus on pertinent social/gender-based issues and add to the general awareness of the academic community of students and faculty of the institution.
