’Modernism in Perspective’ - A webinar organised by Department of English, Loreto College in collaboration with Department of English, Lady Brabourne College

The departments of English of Lady Brabourne College and Loreto College took the initiative of organising a two-day webinar on 20 and 21 August, 2020 titled “Modernism in Perspective”. This webinar was the joint venture of the Department of English ( UG and PG sections) and IQAC, Lady Brabourne College and the Department of English (UG and PG sections) and IQAC, Loreto College. The programme began with short addresses by Prof. Sankjukta Das, (Head, Department of English, Lady Brabourne College), Prof. Siuli Sarkar (Principal of Lady Brabourne College) and Dr. Sr. Christine Coutinho (Principal, Loreto College).

Ms. Sulagna Chattopadhyay, Assistant Professor, Department of English, Loreto College delivered a talk, “The Laurentian Hero: Texts and Contexts” where she established D. H. Lawrence’s Sons and Lovers as a transitional novel because it intertwines the 19th Century realist convention with the modernist questions of selfhood and identity. She also shared her views on the chaotic order of modernism, the technique of Lawrence, how Lawrence was criticized by feminine critics and on the ending of Sons and Lovers.

Dr. Sumita Banerjee (Head, Department of English, Loreto College) welcomed the participants on the second day of the webinar. Dr. Indrajit Bose (Assistant Professor, Department of English, Guru Nanak Institute of Technology) gave a presentation on Conrad, his life and works detailing his experiments with narrative technique. He also asserted how as an early modernist, Conrad projected themes such as ‘the exploration of isolation and man in extremities’, ‘existentialism’ and ‘the predicament of the guilt haunted exile’ in his novels.

Both the sessions were invigorating and invited a number of questions and comments. The webinar reached out to more than 160 people including the students of UG and PG of the organising colleges. The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Indrani Choudhuri Dutt.
