Workshop on Model United Nations

On April 16 , 2025, the incipient United Nations-Model United Nations Cell of Loreto College, Kolkata had its inaugural workshop on Model United Nations. The workshop was conducted by Ms. Simran Koiry and Ms. Anqua Enam. Both of them are experts and trainers in MUNs and have organised workshops in various educational institutions in Kolkata.

The intensive workshop commenced with Ms. Koiry and Ms. Enam enumerating the basic procedure of the MUNs followed by extensive discussions on their nuanced aspects. They explicated how the committees are formed, the importance of the Executive Body and lobbying, how the agenda is set, how the countries establish their stances, etc. They underscored the importance of research and mentioned some reliable sites of information which will aid the students in the upcoming MUNs.

It was an interactive workshop and the enthusiastic students voiced their queries concerning the ways in which they can establish their views in the instances when they are assigned the delegation of countries belonging to the Global South, the manner in which they can overcome the ‘blame game’ that is rampant during the discussions, and also how to establish alliances in the meetings.

The workshop ended with Ms. Koiry and Ms. Enam focusing on AIPPMs (All India Political Party Meet) and IPs (International Press) which have also gained importance alongside MUNs. They also provided their indispensable inputs regarding the formation of a MUN team in the college.

The importance of the MUNs in the present global scenario can hardly be dismissed. They provide the platform at a micro as well as a macro level for students to participate in simulations of the functions of the United Nations. The extensive research is instrumental in moulding the investigative bent in the minds of the students and the discussions and debates help them develop their confidence, personality and presence of mind. These become efficacious in the formation of the future delegates and leaders.
