History and Historiography
The Department of History inaugurated the Alumnae Lecture Series 1 with the session titled History and Historiography on 28th March, 2025 where the Semester 2 History Major students were given a unique opportunity to interact with and learn from two extremely talented alumnae, Ms. Ahana Sen and Ms. Sudeshna Sarkar,currently pursuing M.A. in the Dept. of History Jadavpur University.
Ms. Sudeshna Sarkar started the session by explaining what historiography means and how important it is for understanding any topic in History. She described the various schools of historiography for Indian history and discussed the central themes of each of these schools Taking the Mughal Empire as the primary example, they explained the various interpretations and opinions provided by a variety of historians of divergent points of view.
Ms. Ahana Sen then discussed the varying perceptions of 18th century India and how different historians have analysed it. They also provided practical advice as to how references should be done to increase the credibility of answers, suggested strategies to tackle semester exams efficiently and how to revise thoroughly.
Their experiences alongside their knowledge of the subject made the event highly informative as well as interactive. The session thus was extremely enriching and enjoyable for the Semester 2 students.
