Personal Styling Session

On February 27, 2025, the Loreto College Placement Cell, in collaboration with Pearl Academy, organised an engaging and insightful session on Personal Styling. The session was conducted by Ms. Akanksha Choubey, an esteemed faculty member and expert in fashion styling. The session aimed to illuminate the profound connection between personal image, self-presentation, and the psychology of perception, particularly in professional and social settings.

Ms. Choubey introduced the concept that styling is a powerful form of visual storytelling, shaping how individuals are perceived within seconds. She discussed the neurological basis of snap judgments, referencing the Fusiform Face Area (FFA) and the amygdala, which play a critical role in facial recognition and emotional processing. An interactive exercise demonstrated the rapidity with which people form opinions, reinforcing the significance of first impressions.

A focal point of the session was the Image Cycle, which outlines the interplay between self-perception, self-presentation, and external perception. Ms. Choubey emphasised the bidirectional nature of perception, explaining that while individuals shape how they present themselves, external judgments are formed based on those very cues. The discussion further delved into the psychological and cultural connotations of colours, illustrating how certain hues evoke specific associations beyond conscious control.

The session also explored the concept of personal branding, highlighting that every individual possesses a brand identity, whether intentionally developed or not. Ms. Choubey elaborated on the strategic alignment of self-presentation with personal and professional aspirations, emphasising how appropriate styling fosters confidence, enhances credibility, and leaves a lasting impression. She referenced research demonstrating the impact of attire on hiring decisions, underlining the role of appearance in professional success.

The discussion culminated in an exploration of identifying and refining one's personal style, encouraging students to embrace authenticity, confidence, and individuality in their sartorial choices. The session’s most compelling aspect was its interactive approach, allowing participants to actively engage with the material and reflect on their own presentation.

This session provided a comprehensive and thought-provoking exploration of the psychological, cultural, and strategic dimensions of personal styling, equipping students with the knowledge and awareness to cultivate a strong, intentional, and professional self-image.
