Field Trip to an Exhibition of Paintings by Gopal Ghose
On March 22, 2025, 20 students of the undergraduate and postgraduate sections of the Department of English, Loreto College, Kolkata, who are attending the add-on course on Literature and the other Arts, were taken for a field trip to the Alipore Museum, where the Delhi Art Gallery (DAG) had curated an exhibition of the artist Gopal Ghose's works. Members of DAG acted as guides, elucidating on Gopal Ghose's trajectory as an artist who was deeply influenced by art movements such as Expressionism and Fauvism. Exploring the collaboration and interaction between the visual arts and literature, the students were shown particular paintings and invited to critically analyse them, keeping in mind the use of colour, perspective, and medium. An archival corner showcased letters exchanged between the artist and Rabindranath Tagore, and a digital tablet gave access to the artist's sketches. Students were also able to hear contemporary music that had been inspired by these paintings, thus establishing the inextricable connection between literature, music, and the visual arts. The field trip was an immersive and insightful experience, culminating in a painting activity in which students enthusiastically participated.
