Workshop on Mental Health in Everyday Worklife for Support Staff

A workshop on Mental Health in Everyday Worklife was organised by the Department of Psychology and the Counselling Cell on January 16, 2025 for 13 support staff of Loreto College, Kolkata. Sr. Dr. A. Nirmala, Teacher-in-Charge of Loreto College; Ms. Prajna Dutta, College Counsellor; and Dr. Jhelum Podder, Assistant Professor of the Department of Psychology were present at the workshop. The purpose of the workshop was to initiate mental health awareness among the support staff and familiarise them with stress-related interventions. The interventions were carefully chosen so that they would be simple and effective enough to be practised by the participants without the aid of professionals.

The session began with a few exercises that helped the participants to explore the mind-body connection. This provided an experiential comprehension of how psychological stress can lead to different physical issues. The participants subsequently listened to a conceptual lecture on the signs and symptoms of stress. A video on the same topic was also showcased. Finally, the participants were taught breathing techniques that would help relax the body. The members of the support staff were enthusiastic and responsive throughout the session. They expressed their eagerness to participate in similar workshops in the future, and some even reported feelings of noticeable physical improvement after the session.
