Field Trip to Jolabhumi Utsab 2025
Loreto College, Kolkata revived its enriching Add-On Heritage Course on February 5, 2025 after a hiatus. The course had its first field trip on February 8, 2025 to the Jolabhumi Utsav, organised at Dhalipara F.P. School in the East Kolkata Wetlands. The field trip included a walk through the wetlands, during which students learned about groundwater conservation methods and the adversities faced by the local people due to growing pollution. They also enjoyed a dance performance by primary school students dressed as plants, flowers, and butterflies to celebrate the Jolabhumi Utsav.
The walk through the wetlands played a central role in engaging the students, giving them the opportunity to witness and learn about various fish and bird species native to the area. The birdwatching session, in particular, piqued the students' interest. They were also educated in fish cultivation methods in the wetlands, with a focus on how the shifting method of fish farming helps conserve the quality of wetland soil.
The walk was followed by an insightful video presentation about the native animals of the wetlands, such as the Baghroll, which are gradually becoming extinct. This is due to the increased concretisation of the wetlands, loss of forest habitats and agricultural lands, and the modernisation efforts adopted by the locals.
A lively dance performance by young children and a jamming session by the organisers of the Utsav rounded off the day, making it a memorable and constructive experience for the students. The Jolabhumi Utsav 2025 was a deeply enriching experience for the students, encouraging them to become more conscious of their natural heritage and the importance of its conservation. It inspired them to work towards bridging the gap between humans and nature in the years to come.
