Heritage Walk

Loreto College, Kolkata organised a captivating Heritage Walk for students of the Add-On Heritage Course on February 26, 2025. The walk, which was conducted under the guidance of Ms. Sangita Geol and Dr. Suparna Bhattacharya, focused on revisiting the beautiful lanes of Chitpur in North Kolkata. It took the participants on a journey through time, unveiling the layers of history and culture preserved within the lanes of Chitpur and North Kolkata as a whole.

The Heritage Walk unveiled the beauty of several remarkable historical sites, such as Chitpur's Chunnam Galli, renamed Chunna Gali during the British rule, which is a street rich in history. The Badan Chand Roy Bari, a well-known family home, hosts a famous Durga Puja. Its date of establishment is debated, and its architecture blends European styles with a traditional Bengali "chala" roof temple, boasting a legacy of over 150 years. Haji Allauddin Sweets, a 102-year-old shop, originally sold batasha and later introduced popular North Indian sweets such as mawa laddoos and gulab jamuns, made with pure ghee. Haji Khuda Buksh Nabi Buksh is a long-standing perfume (attar) shop. The Nakhoda Masjid, the largest mosque in Bengal, can hold around 10,000 worshippers. The history of Salim Manzil, once the residence of Gauhar Jaan, and her contribution to the history of gramophone recording, along with many other historical places, highlight the rich cultural heritage and past glory of the area.

The insightful knowledge shared by Ms. Geol highlighted the cultural tapestry of the architecture and its significance. The Heritage Walk captivated the students' imaginations, fostering a deeper understanding of the historical lanes of Kolkata, ensuring an educational and enriching experience.
