Department of Geography Diamond Jubilee Reunion 2023

The alumni of the Department of Geography came together to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of the Department on July 27, 2023 and created History!

Over 110 alumni and guests of the Department of Geography came back to the Loreto College campus on July 27, 2023 to renew their lifelong connection to this special place. It was a fantastic opportunity to reconnect with friends, classmates and teachers to see how the Department has grown over the last six decades.

The highlight of Sixty years of glory and fame were the women of the Batch of 1963! Mrs. Mamta Swaika, Mrs. Abha Ghuwalewala, and Mrs. Kumkum Swaika Dabriwal, students from the first batch of the Honours department who graduated in 1966, shared insights from their time in the department. Quoting Mrs. Mamta Swaika, who also served as the Head of the Department, “the Reunion was a sentimental journey back in time and will always remain a treasured memory”.

Prof. Nandini Dasgupta, Socio-economist and Gender Expert, Adam Smith International, London School of Economics, U.K., Prof. Gulshan Singh, Prof. Leela Sachdev, Author of several MacMacmillan publications, Prof. Bandana Purkayastha, Professor of Sociology at University of Connecticut, U.S.A and Prof. Elizabeth Chacko, Professor of Geography and International Affairs at The George Washington University, USA., were the former faculty members of the department who joined the celebrations from India and abroad.

It was a time to reminisce about the old days with friends and classmates, some of whom had not met in more than 50 years! The alumni also enjoyed meeting current academics and students and finding out all about the work they do. The alumni are excelling in different career paths, shattering glass ceilings, making business decisions, leading great minds and making an impact in various spheres. The current students welcomed the alumni by showcasing their talent and put forward a brilliant and engaging cultural programme.

This day will be etched in everyone’s hearts. It was a day of reliving old memories and making new ones.
