Commemoration of National Education Day: Special Lecture & Book Release



The Departments of Education and B. Ed., Loreto College, Kolkata commemorated National Education Day, 2022, with an invigorating lecture and a book launch on November 24, 2022. The Chief Guests for the occasion were Mr. Barry O'Brien and Mrs Denise O'Brien.

Mr O’Brien, one of India's leading quiz-masters, motivational speaker and notable educationist, discussed the changing role of educators as facilitators of learning. Through his speech, he demonstrated the various skills of effective teaching drawing examples from his life and experiences. Stressing on the importance of making education relevant for learners, Mr O’Brien encouraged educators to provide vocational training in order to prepare them for the challenges of life.

While highlighting the importance of observation and perseverance for any educationist, he mentioned how Christian missionary schools and Anglo-Indian schools focus on character building. Mr O'Brien encouraged the young audience to make a difference in society, as unique individuals, capable of independent critical thinking.
In the second half of the programme Dr Neeta Dang introduced the book to the audience and highlighted the contributions by various educators.Education…Gleanings is an anthology of articles emphasizing the evolution of education and teaching via the transformative nature of Jesuit education, enhancement of the self through education, and how liberalization and the post-truth world have impacted education and our lives.

The event ended with the official book launch by Sr Coutinho and Mrs and Mr O'Brien. The students were once again reminded of the place education has in their lives, and how they can facilitate the development of young minds.
