Interdisciplinary Webinar for Students on “Out of the Shadows”: Confronting Abuse of Children and Women by Departments of Education, Human Rights and Sociology
Departments of Education, Human Rights and Sociology in association with Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC)Loreto College organized Interdisciplinary Webinar for Students on “Out of the Shadows”: Confronting Abuse of Children and Women on October 15, 2020, on Google Meet at 4 p.m. The very essence of “Inclusion” lies in embracing all much beyond differences and diversity. Vulnerability to adverse influences can expose children and women to ‘at-risk behaviour’. Women and children across geographical boundaries are victims of human rights violations throughout their lives. It is rather disgraceful that despite several legal initiatives undertaken by the Parliament and State Legislatures of India for protection and promotion of women and child rights, every year the physical, mental and emotional well-being of millions of women and children in India are threatened by maltreatment such as abuse, neglect, violence and exploitation. The objective of this Webinar for students was to provide them with a platform to address issues ranging from gender discrimination, recognize, respond and report to allegations of women and child abuse or neglect. Advocating the need to build a safe environment the webinar attempted to outline how it is important to provide the appropriate modes of detection, intervention and redressal mechanisms to prevent abuse and ensure protection and empowerment of children and women.
The Resource Persons for the Webinar were Ms Ruchira Goswami, Assistant Professor, School of Social Sciences, NUJS, Kolkata and Ms Monalisa Saha, Assistant Professor, Department of Law, Burdwan University.
The Moderator for the Webinar was Ms Druhi Dasgupta, Lecturer, Department of Human Rights. The resources persons through their deliberations facilitated participants to acquire an experiential understanding among all the participants both students and teachers of the various forms of abuse that children and women can be subjected to as well as made each one conscious of their rights and the different redressal mechanisms. In the second part of the Webinar, a detailed PowerPoint presentation prepared by the students from the departments of Education, Human Rights and Sociology on several issues focusing on the theme of the Webinar was showcased. The Coordinators for the Webinar were Dr Ranjita Dawn, Head, Department of Education, Ms Druhi Dasgupta, Lecturer, Department of Human Rights and Ms Sreya Sen, Lecturer, Department of Sociology. The Webinar was attended by and received active participation of students from the departments of Education, Human Rights, Sociology and B.Ed.
