History Department


The Department of History, Loreto College is one of the oldest departments of this celebrated institution. The Department’s approach towards the discipline is very comprehensive with intensive and extensive emphasis on facts, historiography and analysis of India and the world. The Department is attuned to the changing needs of education and pedagogy and gives utmost importance to active learning in the form of discussions, presentations, seminars, talks by eminent professionals and academics. The Department also tries to enhance the research skills of its students and encourages them to engage with issues of the past that can be linked to the present. The pedagogy of the department includes lectures, group and individual assignments, tutorials, extensive use of audio-visual aids, debates and panel discussions. Academic excursions are undertaken under the supervision of the faculty outside college hours to help engage the students with the curriculum in the material realm. Keeping in mind the academic needs of the students, the Department has created a special departmental seminar library and book-bank. Regular student evaluations are made on the basis of class & home assignments, tutorials, project work, quizzes as well as college and university examinations.

Courses offered by the History Department include the 3 year Honours Degree Course and the 3 year General Degree Course. At present the Department is engaged with both the Annual System and the Choice Based Credit System under the University of Calcutta.

The Department has been organising an annual inter-collegiate academic event Historia since 2017. This comprises a keynote address by an eminent academician, student paper presentations followed by a debate on a selected theme. The Department also offers a Heritage Certificate Course sensitising the students towards the need to sustain and preserve our tangible and intangible heritage. Such multifarious activities contribute to making the Department dynamic.


Department: Faculty

Dr. Krishnokoli Hazra

Qualifications: M.A., B.Ed., Ph.D.

Krishnokoli Hazra has completed her graduation and post-graduation from the Department of History, Jadavpur University with a First Class in both. She has received her Ph.D degree from the University of Calcutta. She has presented papers at several conferences and seminars including the Eighth International Convention of Asia Scholars (ICAS 8) held at Macao (2013). Her research papers have been published in peer-reviewed journals and books. Her area of interest is representations of indigenous communities (’tribes’) in British colonial works. She is actively involved with an NGO ’Samobeto’, that works for the upliftment of women and children. She is an avid reader of both English and Bengali literature with a special interest in late 19th and early 20th century writings, historical fiction, biographies and natural history.
   

Dr. Mrs. Suparna Ghosh

Qualifications: M.A., B.Ed., Ph.D. M.Ed

Dr. Suparna Ghosh is an Associate Professor in the Department of History and a Teacher Educator in the Department of B.Ed , Loreto College, Kolkata. She was awarded her Ph.D by Jadavpur University on ’Women of Bengal in Sports’. She has published articles in national and international peer reviewed journals and books and presented several papers at various state, national and international seminars. She is also the peer reviewer of International Journals- ’Soccer and Society’ and ’Sport in South Asia’. Her interest areas are sports and gender studies, dwindling communities of Kolkata - the Baghdadi Jews and the Parsees and popular culture - rural culture, customs, traditions. She has completed her M.Ed from the Department of Education, University of Calcutta.


Dr. Anindita Bandyopadhyay

Qualifications: M.A, M.Phil, B.Ed., Ph.D

Anindita Bandyopadhyay has completed her M.A.,M.Phil and Ph.D degrees from the University of Calcutta. She has presented papers at numerous conferences and seminars including the Eighth International Conference of Asian Scholars at Macao (2013).She has also published a book The Journey of Dhorai, as well as articles in peer-reviewed journals. Her area of specialisation is Gandhi and Journalism. She is a founder-member of an NGO Samobeto which works for the upliftment of underprivileged women and children.
   

Ms. Srijita Chakravarty

Qualifications: M.A.

Ms.Chakravarty is an Assistant Professor with 12 years of teaching experience. Her specialization is in Women’s Studies and she is pursuing her research on ’Women Labourers in the Tea Plantations of Assam 1859-1930’ She is also one of the Staff Advisors of the History Society of Loreto College.
   

Dr. Sukanya Mitra

Qualifications: M.A., MPhil,Ph.D

Received Ph.D degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi in 2013. Recieved M.Phil degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi in 2008. Received MA in Modern Indian History from Jadavpur University in 2005. Received B.A. in History from Loreto College Kolkata, University of Calcutta in 2001.
