The Bengali Department of the College encourages students to read and write in Bengali and to develop literary knowledge. It also inculcates creativity and interest in Bengali language, motivates students to present papers and attend related workshops.
Many students of the Department are at present working in renowned schools of Kolkata, in print media & visual media, as interpreters in Central Government, Delhi and pursuing research in Bengali language & literature.
The students present a literary wall magazine every year, in groups. A short story competition ‘Bhuter Golpo’ is organized annually and the 3 best stories are published in the college magazine, encouraging creativity in the students.
Students are taken on educational tours and are provided scope for paper presentation, creative writing and book review which helps them to explore possibilities in print media and other creative avenues.

Dr. Amrita Dasgupta
Qualifications: M.A., Ph.D.
An associate professor , in the Bengali Department , Dr. Amrita Dasgupta has been teaching in Loreto College for the last 20 years.She has completed her graduation and masters from Jadavpur University. She has been awarded a doctoral degree by Jadavpur University under the supervision of Dr. Subha Chakroborty Dasgupta. Her area of interest is ‘Bengali Folk and Fairy tales’. She had also completed a UGC Minor Research Project on Bengali fairy tales. She has published several articles in reputed journals. She believes in thinking beyond boundaries.
