Celebrating World Environment Day at Biswa Bangla Convention Centre
The West Bengal Pollution Control Board celebrated its 50th anniversary with a two-day seminar held at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre on June 10 and 11, 2024. The theme “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience” was chosen for the seminar, in honour of World Environment Day.
The programme on Day 1 began with a video message from the West Bengal Pollution Control Board that highlighted its historic journey and achievements. The panel discussion that followed emphasised the multidimensional nature of environmental problems. The second half of the day saw the energetic participation of the youth in a quiz competition conducted for school and college students. The day concluded with the announcement of the winners of a poster-making competition—an endeavour that saw the true culmination of artistry and environmental awareness. Eleven students of Loreto College along with one professor attended the event on the first day, out of which three students participated in the inter-college quiz.
The programme on the second day aimed to raise awareness and foster dialogue on the pressing issues of land degradation, desertification, and drought resilience, emphasising their critical impact on the environment and human well-being. Eminent environmentalists and scholars delivered keynote addresses, providing insights into these challenges. Innovative strategies and sustainable solutions to these challenges were also proposed during the engaging panel discussions, which brought together experts, policymakers, and stakeholders. Nine students and one professor from Loreto College attended the insightful discussions.
Through their active participation in the event on both days, the students gained valuable knowledge on environmental issues and reaffirmed their commitment to evolve into more responsible stewards of the environment.
