National Education Day 2023
The Department of Education, Loreto College, Kolkata observed National Education Day on November 29, 2023 to commemorate the noble ideals and distinct visions of the torch bearers of the past who have endowed the human race with the light of wisdom.
The programme commenced with a welcome speech delivered by Mrs. Archita Roy Biswas (Head, Department of Education), wherein she elaborated on the true meaning of the term ‘education.’ She emphasized how education was a fundamental human right that could carve out a potentially utopian world for future generations. She then welcomed Mrs. Ananya Chakraborti Chatterjee, Hon’ble Advisor to the West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights, a filmmaker, and a strong proponent of rights for women and children, who proceeded to deliver a special lecture on Education and Rabindranath Tagore.
Mrs. Chatterjee delved deep into the current plight of higher education for Indian women and traced the source of disparity back to Vedic literature where superstitious beliefs resulted in the denial of education to women. She introduced the students to the powerful philosophy of Virginia Woolf and read out excerpts from Rabindranath Tagore’s philosophical works. Mrs. Chatterjee educated the students about Tagore’s life story and shared a number of interesting anecdotes. She concluded her captivating lecture by invoking the exemplary principles that Gandhi followed in his life and highlighting how education contributes immensely to eternal welfare and freedom of the mind. The lecture session was an enriching experience for the attending students.
