International Symposium on Environmental Sustainability
On November 29, 2022, an International Symposium on Environmental Sustainability was organized by Loreto College, Kolkata, in collaboration with Lions Clubs International District 322 B1 and Coordinating Club, Lions Club of Calcutta Mahanagar. The theme for the International Symposium was 'Understanding the Importance of Gender Equity in Climate Change'. There were two sessions in this event. The first session included deliberations by Dr. Rajesh Kumar, IPS, DGP Kolkata and Member Secretary of West Bengal Pollution Control Board and Ms. Kehkashan Basu, Founder President of Green Hope Foundation. Ms. Basu joined virtually from Canada. Dr. Rajesh Kumar gave an enlightening talk on the socio-economic problems that women in remote areas face on a daily basis due to erosion of soil that harms crop production and stubble burning in Bengal, UP, Bihar. Ms. Basu highlighted understanding the importance of Gender Equity in Climate Change and how it has been implemented through the various policies by her foundation "Green Hope Foundation".
An inter-college debate on Gender Stereotypes Hinder Green Efforts comprised the second half of the event. The participating colleges were Bethune College, Jadavpur University, Presidency University, Scottish Church College, St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous) and Loreto College. The moderator for the debate was Mr. Tarakeshwar Singh. Loreto College bagged the “Best Team”, “Best Speaker for The Motion” and “Best Speaker Against the Motion” awards. St Xavier’s College was awarded “Best Runner-Up Team”
