Interdisciplinary Webinar
On May 14, 2022 the Interdisciplinary Webinar, organized by the Department of Sociology and the Department of Education, and approved by IQAC, Loreto College was held. On this occasion our invited speaker was Dr. Niharika Jaiswal who is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology, at Sri Venkateswara College, University of Delhi. She completed her Doctoral degree in Sociology in 2021 from JNU. Her research is around the larger themes of higher education, practice of social sciences, analysis of curriculum and pedagogy. She has written for Global Dialogue and Educational Dialogue on similar research themes.
The title of her presentation was Contexts, Curriculum and Institutions: Social Sciences in Universities in India. The webinar was designed to understand academic practices within institutional locations. Here the speaker drew examples from both public and private universities across India. In the process, the relationship between the field of higher education and individual university practices were highlighted. Then the discussion traced the significance of historical, regional and other social influences inside the classroom. Finally, the speaker engaged in an extensive discussion on the impact of public policies in practice of social sciences. For this the NEP 2020 was taken into consideration. The webinar was attended by Sociology Elective students from both Semester 2 and 4, and Education Honours students from all 3 years.
