International Women' Day
Women’s Study Society, Loreto College observed International Women’s Day on the virtual platform, on March 9, 2022.
As a part of the convention every year, the coveted Lakshmi Chatterji Memorial Lifetime Award is conferred on a distinguished alumnus of the college, who has a commendable contribution towards women’s welfare and empowerment. This year, the award is conferred upon Mrs. Usha Bubna, retired Professor of Economics and an integral faculty member of the Women’s Cell of the college.
The felicitation programme was followed by a special talk on “Property Rights of Women: War Against Discrimination in Rights”, delivered by Prof. Ritu Gupta, Professor of Law and Research Director at Centre of Business and Financial Laws, National Law University Delhi. In this lecture Prof. Gupta emphasized on how women’s rights on property and inheritance are a narrative of imbalance and discrimination all over the world and how mindsets, religion and a number of factors play critical role in that issue. She made an excellent presentation on the history and evolution of the Hindu laws of inheritance and how still there is a long way to cover. She also harped upon laws against domestic violence and abuse of women at workplace.
Gender justice, where lies the unacceptable loopholes - were the few highpoints of her talk, that would surely leave a long-lasting impact on the audience which was comprised of faculty and students. The programme closed with a short film on “Women in History and Literature: A Cinematic Perspective on Women and Gender Roles”, that was created by the students of the Literary Society. The film not only is pertinent and thought provoking, it also presents the sensitive perception of the students, how they perceive the woman question.
