Online Debate Competition
The Department of Economics had organized an online debate competition Colloquy on June 20, 2021 at 5.30 p.m. The platform for the event was Google Meet. The motion for the debate was Research and Development: Is Privatisation the Need of the Hour? Two students from each semester had participated in the debate. The events started with an introduction by Sohini Chakraborty of Semester 6. The debate was organized to encourage the students towards dissent and discussion at peer level on contemporary issues, enrich their expressions and thought and leverage them in terms of diction and semantics. The students were able to deepen their horizon in thoughts and hone their flair in oratory skills and rhetoric. The session was highly informative and enriching. Different perspectives of privatization with respect to research and development were shared by the participants in their speech. They were all very confident and had put forward their arguments very convincingly. The rebuttal round was also highly enlightening. The judges for this event were Ms. Devika Chirimar , Ph.D scholar at Georgetown University, USA and Ms. Dipanjana Roy, Credit Portfolio Senior Manager with Citibank, North America. The moderator was Ms. Satakshi Chakraborty who is currently pursuing her post-graduation from Northeastern University, Boston. All three are past pupils of the department and have been excellent debaters. The event was effectively moderated by Satakshi Chakraborty. Both the judges and the moderator shared their views on the motion which were highly informative. The judges also identified areas in which the participants could improve. The event came to an end with the formal vote of thanks proposed by Soumili Basu of Semester 6.
