Research Cell Presentation

The last Research Cell presentation for the academic session 2020-2021 took place on July 3, 2021. Nabeeha Jamil and Angira Das belonging to the Department of Geography presented papers on two very relevant themes. The research papers have been written under the supervision of Mrs. Sharmila Ray Kumam of the department of Geography.
Nabeeha's paper was titled, Is India Moving Towards a Pan-National Language? A Study of the Linguistic Landscape of India. In her paper, Jamil studied the importance of linguistic diversity and the politics of language. Her paper included a critique of the Official Language Act - which tends to favor people who know Hindi/English or the scheduled languages. Therefore, she pointed towards the need for in-built versatility in order to allow all languages to flourish.

Angira Das's paper titled Climate Change and the Threat of Submergence of Islands provided details on how sea level is rising due to average rate of increase in temperature of the earth leading to melting of glaciers and thermal expansion of the sea water. The objectives of the study were to understand the lag between theoretical and practical implementation of laws and the gap between the government and the general public about the ongoing crisis. Das followed a qualitative method consisting of ethnography and grounded theory as well as a case study method. She then provided an explanation of climate change and sea level rise and discussed how the pacific islands were facing the threat of submergence.
The presentations were followed by a question-answer session. it was an informative and interesting programme.
