Historia 2020-2021

The 5th edition of Historia was organised on 22 January 2021 by the History Society in collaboration with the Department of History, Loreto College, Kolkata. This year’s theme was “History in the Media: Truth v/s Myth”. Keeping in mind the current situation, Historia was held as an intra-college event on an online platform. We were fortunate to have the esteemed professor Dr. Urvi Mukhopadhyay from West Bengal State University, as our judge for the students’ paper presentation. The day started with Noyontara Gupta (third year History Honours), giving the introductory speech followed by a prayer service conducted by Sr. Ablin Tirkey from the same class.

The session continued with the Head of the Department of History, Dr. Anindita Bandyopadhyay delivering the welcome address. She explained how Historia was a dream of the Department, which turned into reality 5 years ago. She also pointed out how this event has gone from a national level to an international level with it being judged by internationally renowned and reputed dignitaries. Dr. Suparna Ghosh, staff advisor of the History Society, then addressed the gathering. She talked about how the event gives the Society a platform to make history an interesting subject for all. Ishita Dan (third year History Honours) then introduced the judge Dr Mukhopadhyay and requested her to address the session.

Dr. Urvi Mukhopadhyay started by talking about how relevant this year’s theme is considering we live in a digital world. She explained how media plays a role in remaking history and went on to share how media has helped us to understand both the past and present. The students’ paper presentations commenced.

A total of six students presented papers on the given theme. Their overall performance was very impressive. After the presentations ended there was a Q&A session. The judge, Dr Urvi Mukhopadhyay was very pleased and expressed what she liked about each of the presentations and what could be improved in each. The best paper prize was shared jointly by Anushka Datta and Steffi Burns (third year History Honours) who presented a paper titled, ‘Native Americans in the eyes of Media’ and Arum Khan (third year Political Science Honours) whose paper was entitled, ‘History in the Media: Truth v/s Myth’. The event finally came to a close with Titas Mukherjee (third year History Honours) delivering the vote of thanks.
