A Web Talk on News and Reporting

On January 30, 2021, an interactive web talk on ‘News and Reporting’ was organised by the Department of Journalism & Mass Communication, Loreto College in association with NSHM School of Media and Communication. Dr Firoz Mohammed, Director at NSHM College of Management & Technology was the resource person. A staunch believer in ethical journalism, Dr Mohammed decoded the real purpose of media and news: to highlight relevant issues, to bring out the important facts and figures in an unbiased manner, and to integrate society as a whole, and called attention to its emancipatory power. He educated the students about the gatekeeping paradigm, based on which news stories are selected or rejected and also discussed the core values that make journalism a channel of distinct cultural discourse in a democracy. He encouraged the eager students to cultivate the spirit of research as a true journalist must, and highlighted credible journalism unmarred by the polarizing power of politics as the need of the hour.
