Call for Papers & Call for Posters organised by Dept. of Human Rights & Dept. of Sociology
‘SOCIAL IMPACT OF THE NOVEL CORONAVIRUS’
(MAY - JULY 2020)
The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has quickly spread across the world in a matter of months. In India, while the numbers are soaring, various Government agencies, researchers, and practitioners are providing us with guidelines to flatten the curve and thereby control the spread of this virus. The pandemic is provoking numerous questions at all levels. It has also shown that modern society is extremely vulnerable and under-prepared for such events. Keeping this in context, the Department of Human Rights and the Department of Sociology collaborated to organize an online event inviting papers and posters from students to present their valuable insights and showcase their creativity.
Students from all the years were invited to undertake a research study based on secondary data collection on the following themes highlighting the social impact of Covid-19 cutting across vulnerable sections of the society. Papers were encouraged on studies focusing on local, state, national, and/or cross-national reactions to grapple with the pandemic. Some of the themes included were:
Social distancing and potential exposure among vulnerable populations (homeless persons, disabled individuals, the elderly, street children, migrant labourers, etc.)
Economic and labour-market consequences of COVID-19
Rising number of domestic violence
Incidents of intensifying untouchability
Livelihood of the transgender community
Role reversal for women at household domain during the lockdown
Female workforce belonging to the unorganized sector
