The Partition of India, 1947: Continuities, Legacies and Silences

The Department of English and the Department of Bengali, in collaboration with the Literary Society of Loreto College, Kolkata, organised an event commemorating ‘The Partition of India, 1947: Continuities, Legacies and Silences’ on April 22, 2022.
The event began with the screening of a series of interviews on the Partition and its related consequences. A major portion of the event was devoted to six paper presentations by the UG and PG students of the Department of English as well as the UG students of the Department of Bengali. Each presentation highlighted a distinct aspect of the 1947 Partition, drawing on sources such as literature, film, and visual iconography. The first session was chaired by Dr. Krishnokoli Hazra, while the second session was chaired by Dr. Anindita Bandopadhyay, both faculty members of the Department of History who contributed their valuable input at the end of their respective sessions. The presentations were followed by poetry recitations in Bengali, Hindi, and Urdu, and the staging of an engaging theatrical production by the Literary Society.
The event also included an enriching exhibition on the theme of Partition, conceptualised and created by the students. Various Partition narratives, interviews, and precious items such as coins, statues, and stamps from both sides of the border were on display. The centre of attention was a fence made of barbed wire, symbolic of the division of States.
Approximately 200 people attended the event, which was sponsored by State Bank of India (Middleton Row branch) and Calcutta Cacophony.
