Inter College Event: Department of Education
Two students from the Department of Education presented papers at the Inter-College Departmental Students' Webinar organised by the Department of Education of Shri Shikshayatan College on June 25, 2021. Ms. Sorralyn Erica Williams from Semester IV spoke on Marginalization through Gender Disparities, focussing on the status of women in different spheres of life, highlighting how subjugation and arbitrariness masquerading as cultural practices, religious edicts and gender perception continue to be the existential issues facing women, traversing across four important areas: Education, Economic sphere, Political and Gender Based Marginalization.
Ms. Pragnya Roy from Semester VI presented on Transformation of Tribal Community: Vulnerability, Visibility and Identity. Pragyna emphasized that to know a country and her culture, one needs to know her people; herein India cannot boast about its diversity and richness without mentioning its tribal communities that reflect a unique and colourful part of the Indian culture mosaic. Society historically viewed them as primitive, superstitious, backward and underdeveloped because of the absence of so called "city culture" and differences in language and traditions from mainstream Indian society. Light was thrown on some significant contributions and the silent role that these communities continue to play in society.
Dr. Ranjana Banerjee who chaired the Webinar made valuable observations. The students were mentored by Dr. Ranjana Banerjee and Dr. Ranjita Dawn.
