Independence Day 2023 at Loreto College
On August 15, 2023, the second-year students of the Department of B.Ed. at Loreto College, Kolkata, in association with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell, organized a programme to commemorate India’s 77th Independence Day. The theme of “Nation First, Always First” aimed to recount India’s journey to freedom and stressed the essence of standing together by the country. The programme was a harmonious blend of tradition, patriotism, and acknowledgement of contemporary heroes.
The event commenced with a collective pledge of commitment to the nation. The singing of the National Anthem reverberated with unity and pride. This was followed by a prayer for peace and unity in the country, and the lighting of the lamp. The singing of the hymn, “As We Gather on this Morn” fostered a sense of togetherness and spirituality, setting the tone for the event. Dr. Kaustuva Banerjee, Head of the Department of B.Ed., emphasized the theme in the Independence Day message, stressing the need to prioritize the environment alongside the nation’s progress in all aspects of life.
The cultural programme began with a Ganesh Vandana dance performance, epitomizing the country’s cultural tapestry. The subsequent medley of “Vande Mataram” and “Apni Mati” evoked fervour and nostalgia, serving as a reminder of the sacrifices and emotions that fuelled the freedom struggle. This was followed by a dramatic performance and the recitation of a poem, paying homage to the often-overlooked women who played pivotal roles in India’s fight for independence. The performance was a moving tribute to their resilience and determination.
The tribute to Covid Warriors acknowledged the sacrifices and dedication of frontline workers during the pandemic, drawing a poignant parallel between their commitment and the spirit of India’s freedom fighters. The students then put up a performance of various folk dance forms, celebrating India’s cultural diversity and adding vibrancy to the programme. The rendition of “Saare Jahaan Se Achcha” by the whole class was a fitting finale, encapsulating the pride and aspiration that defines the nation.
The programme not only honoured India’s history but also recognized the contemporary forces that shape the nation’s present and future. The theme “Nation First, Always First” resonated throughout the programme, inspiring a renewed sense of responsibility and unity among the participants. The event served as a powerful reminder that while independence was won decades ago, the duty to put the nation first remains a constant endeavour.
