World Book and Copyright Day

On April 29, 2023, the first-year students of the Department of B.Ed., Loreto College, organized a programme to celebrate World Book and Copyright Day. The programme was attended by the students of the B.Ed. Department and the faculty of Loreto College. It focused on the theme of Copyright and sought to bring to the forefront the value of literature at a time when the practice of reading is in decline.
The event began with a prayer song, which was followed by a dramatic performance entitled ‘Anonymous.’ The performance was adapted from a movie of the same name that explored the controversy surrounding Edward de Vere, who was believed by some to have been the original creator of the works credited to William Shakespeare. The students brought to life some of the most popular characters of Shakespeare’s plays, including Hamlet, Lady Macbeth, and Mark Antony.
The dramatic performance was followed by an interactive quiz session that covered a wide range of literary works and authors, from J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter to Satyajit Ray’s popular science-fiction tales.
The last performance of the day was a multilingual Shruti Natok entitled ‘Cacophony,’ which brought together some of the multifarious influences and interrelations that literature has stimulated across generations, cultures, and languages. The play was written and executed by the students and incorporated songs and literary readings.
The event ended with the collective realization that literature is essential to ensure literacy, promote cultural diversity and understanding, and preserve the creative economy.
