Crunch Time: Narendra Modi’s National Security Crises. - A Discussion with Dr. Shreeram Chaulia
Dr. Shreeram Chaulia, Professor and Dean, at the Jindal School of International Affairs, O.P. Jindal Global University, Sonipat, gave a presentation on India’s National Security and Foreign Policy on September 8, 2022. The conversation focused on Dr. Chaulia’s most recent book, Crunch Time: Narendra Modi’s National Security Crises.
Based on his years of experience and insights, Dr. Chaulia emphasised the importance of citizens, particularly the young, as stakeholders in national security. He drew attention to India’s defence policy, tracing a logical shift in India’s strategic culture from military/political caution to certainty and assertiveness. He also assisted the students in analysing some of the distinctive elements of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s diplomatic and national security policy for India. The emphasis was on the forceful response to the 2020 Chinese incursion in Ladakh and the 2019 airstrike on the Pakistani terrorist camp at Balakot.
The session ended with Dr. Chaulia addressing questions from students. The discussion helped the audience understand the geopolitical landscape of India and her neighbours and highlighted how ongoing crises and conflicts, particularly those involving China, constitute a threat to India’s national security.
