Excursion to the Indian Museum

The Second and Third Year History students were taken to the Indian Museum on September 8, 2022 to experience an exhibition hosted by D.A.G. entitled March to Freedom to Celebrate 75 years of indian Independence. The exhibition was painstakingly put together by Historian Dr. Mrinalini Venkateswaran. It showcased the Indian Freedom Movement through art, photographs and posters. Ms. Sumana Chakraborty curated the exhibition. The narrative of the exhibition was divided into eight distinct thematic sections: Battles for Freedom; Traffic of Trade; See India; Reclaiming the Past; Exhibit India; From Colonial to National; Shaping the Nation; and Independence. The aim of the exhibition was to approach the narrative from different perspectives. The students got the opportunity to view paintings by famous and lesser-known artists. Portraits of local leaders were interpreted and sometimes their accuracy was questioned as the artists painted the leaders according to their bias and prejudices. There were also posters of nationalist movies on display along with the pamphlets that would be given with the tickets. This was something unknown to the students and they found the visit very enriching.
