CELEBRATION OF STUDENTS' WEEK ACTIVITY – JANUARY 2 – 8, 2024

Day-1 Activity (02-01-2024)
Organizing awareness camp cum help desk for SVMCM, Aikyashree and Post Matric Scholarship


Celebration of Student’s week began in Loreto College on January 2, 2024. The Officiating Principal, Dr. Debika Guha organized an awareness camp for the SVMCM, Aikyashree and Post Matric Scholarship. All students of the all Departments of UG, PG and B.Ed. were invited to the camp. Dr. Guha explained in detail the various scholarships available to the students under SVMCM, Aikyashree and Post Matric Scholarship. She explained to all students the eligibility criteria and all facilities as provided by each of the scholarships. Students were made aware of the help desk available in the college office staff – Ms. Ingrid Rozario serve as the help desk in college. Queries by the students were answered by Dr. Guha.


Day-2 Activity (03-01-2024)
Holding seminars on Digital Education or blend mode of education with emphasis on students' participation

On January 3, 2024, the Department of Education, Loreto College, Kolkata hosted a talk on Digital Education. The resource person was Dr. Sudeshna Lahiri, Head of the Department, Department of Education, University of Calcutta. During the session, attended by students, Dr. Lahiri highlighted the unexpected surge in Digital Education during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has pushed educators to adapt to technology amid various challenges. The talk encompassed an insightful discussion on different types of digital classrooms. Dr. Lahiri illustrated the transformative impact of Digital Education during crises. While emphasizing the advantages of Digital Education, Dr. Lahiri addressed its demerits. She pointed out the challenges of understanding students' psychological states and the absence of physical expressions in the virtual learning environment. Additionally, she shed light on the guiding principles of synchronous and asynchronous instructions, emphasizing the importance of setting classroom norms, ensuring audio quality, and recognizing the diverse range of student abilities. Her engaging talk ended with a discussion on key features of digital education, such as modality, online synchrony, pedagogy, peace of learning, teacher and student roles, and potential challenges for educators. The students also gained valuable insights into cyber security measures for digital learning environments. The interactive session was very helpful to the students for understanding various aspects on Digital Education.


Day-3 Activity (04-01-2024)
Organizing drawing/poster competition

The Social Service Society, Loreto College, Kolkata, organized a Poster-Making Competition as a part of the Students’ Week activity. The competition, held on 4th January 2024, centred around the theme of Organ Donation, emphasizing on the critical need for widespread awareness on this vital issue. Participants, representing both the Undergraduate (UG) and Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) Departments, actively engaged in this special event. The competition served as a platform for students to creatively express their perspectives on organ donation and contribute to fostering awareness within the community. The thematic focus emphasized the promotion of organ donation and the significance of raising awareness. Mehvish Ali Ahmed (Department of B.Ed.) and Amrita Guha (Department of English), were declared as the winner and first runner up respectively. Certificates were given to the winners.


Day-3 Activity (04-01-2024)
Quiz Competition

The Literary Society and the Cine Society of Loreto College, Kolkata jointly organised an interdepartmental quiz, titled Plot Points and Picture Frames: Quiz Edition, on January 04, 2024, as a part of the Students’ Week activity. The quiz, blending literature and cinema, not only served as a battleground for intellectual prowess but also celebrated the timeless narratives that have shaped our cultural landscape. With an eclectic mix of questions spanning classic and contemporary literature to cinematic gems, the quiz promised an exhilarating journey through the annals of storytelling. The office bearers of the two organising societies handled their roles as the quizmasters quite efficiently. The teams were tested on their knowledge of contemporary as well as classic literature, popular figures associated with literature and cinema. The audio-visual and dumb charades rounds in the quiz were undeniably the highlights, elevating the entertainment quotient to new heights. The Department of English secured the first position followed closely by the Department of Psychology. Certificates were given to the winners


Day-4 Activity (05-01-2024)
Organizing Student Credit Card awareness camp cum help desk

As a part of the observance of Students’ Week, on January 5, 2024, an Awareness Camp cum Help Desk on West Bengal Student Credit Card Scheme was organized in the college auditorium. Students from all Departments of UG, PG and B.Ed. were invited to the awareness programme. Mrs. Archita Roy Biswas one of the Nodal Officers of the scheme, explained at length the eligibility criterion, the loan amount and interest rate, the process of application, the requisite documents and the expenses to be covered under the scheme. She also elaborated that further information can be accessed from the official website and encouraged the students to download the official app on their smartphones. At the end of the session the other Nodal Officer, Dr. Debasree Sinha and Helpdesk, Mrs. Sukanya Mullick participated in an interactive session where they clarified the doubts and queries of the students.


Day-4 Activity (05-01-2024)
Cultural programmes - singing competition

The Eastern Cultural Society and the SPICMACAY Society of Loreto College, Kolkata jointly organised a Singing Contest on January 5, 2024, in observance of Student’s Week. The participants contested in two categories: Nazrul Geeti and Ghazal. It was an interdepartmental contest with one participant from each department participating in each category. The event saw a myriad of melodious renditions by a number of talented students from various departments. Ashmi Nandy secured first place in the Ghazal category followed by Uditi Mahapatra in the second place. Adrita Maiti was declared as the winner in the Nazrul Geeti category. The event provided a platform for the young students to showcase their talents. Certificates were given to the winners.

Day-6 Activity (07-01-2024)
Conducting online seminar/ workshop and dissemination of Information regarding Student Welfare schemes and other pertinent issues

On January 7, 2024, an Online Seminar/Workshop on Student Welfare Schemes was organized for the students of UG, PG and B.Ed Departments, as a part of the observance of Students’ Week, for dissemination of information regarding the various student welfare schemes that are available. Dr. Debasree Sinha, one of the Nodal Officers, informed the students about the DPI Special Stipend Scheme, Hindi Scholarship Scheme, WBGMCM Scholarship Scheme and SVMCM Scheme. Mrs. Archita Roy Biswas, another Nodal Officer, informed the students about the Post Matric Scholarship Scheme and the Kanyasree Scheme. Mrs. Sukanya Mullick, the Helpdesk, spoke about the Aikyashree Scheme. Students were encouraged to check the official websites of the various welfare schemes discussed in the session. This online session was successful in imparting relevant and important information about the schemes to the students who attended it.


Day-7 Activity (08-01-2024)
Creative Writing Competition

Inkophilia, an Interdepartmental Creative Writing Competition was organised by the Literary Society, Loreto College, Kolkata on January 08, 2024, as a part of the observance of Students’ Week. The competition was held in English, Bengali and Hindi languages. The event not only celebrated linguistic diversity but also encouraged participants to explore their creativity in multiple cultural contexts. The competition allowed participants to choose any genre or form of writing. Participants were evaluated based on creativity, originality, coherence, and adherence to the chosen language and form. The programme culminated in the announcement of winners across the three languages. Sananda Dey, Alifiya Dodia and Anushka Mukherjee bagged the first position in Bengali, Hindi and English categories respectively.
