Shadows Behind The Mask: A Panel Discussion



On December 6, 2022 the Department of Education in collaboration with Sanlaap organized a panel discussion on Shadows behind the mask: Stop Human and Sex Trafficking. Sanlaap is a non-governmental organization that fights against human trafficking and works to rehabilitate survivors of human trafficking in South Asia. The eminent panelists were Dr. Sarfaraz Ahmed Khan, Associate Professor, West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences and Ms. Tapoti Bhowmick. Senior Programme Coordinator at Sanlaap.
Dr. Sarfaraz Ahmed Khan in his deliberation provided an overview of the circumstances surrounding human and sex trafficking in the country and discussed a number of case studies. He also highlighted the legal provisions that exist to combat this form of exploitation. Ms. Tapoti Bhowmick then spoke about the current challenges of countering human trafficking in South Asia, particularly when dealing with cross-border cases. She also drew attention to the holistic measures implemented by Sanlaap over more than two decades to rescue victims of trafficking and ensure their socio-economic rehabilitation. The discussion succeeded in sensitizing the audience to the menace of human trafficking and emphasized the importance of awareness and suitable action at both the individual and governmental levels.
