Webinar on Yoga and Mental Health

On April 20, 2022, the Psychology Department conducted a webinar on Yoga and Mental Health. Yoga is practiced as part of a healthy lifestyle not only in India, but also abroad. It has several benefits, such as relaxation, de-stressing, regulation of blood sugar and blood pressure and has also been found to be beneficial in producing helpful brain chemicals like endorphins. Students and faculty of the Department attended the hour and half hour workshop by Dr. Amrita Purkayastha,

The session began with some deep breathing, followed by a demonstration on the practice of Ujjayi, as well as instructions on how to achieve it through practice. After some practice, Dr. Purakayastha demonstrated asanas with clear and precise instructions on how to regulate breathing while doing the asanas. The last 20 minutes allowed for an interaction with Dr. Purkayastha. Questions regarding the practice of yoga, apparent religious connotations and its significance to mental health were discussed. The practical and educational session was extremely beneficial to all those in attendance, particularly students.
