Celebration of World Book Day

The Department of B.Ed., Loreto College, Kolkata, organized a special event on April 23, 2022 to celebrate World Book Day, an initiative first started by UNESCO and the international publishing industry that is now celebrated all over the world. The aim to organize such an event was to promote the worldwide celebration of books and reading and to encourage young people to discover the pleasure of reading. The event commenced with a prayer, followed by an introduction, a video stating the significance of books in our lives. The teacher-trainees enacted a play, reminding us why we must read: for enhancement of knowledge, language skills and imagination. A reading session followed, which was a curation of poetry and literary texts in English, Hindi, Tamil, Urdu, Bengali and Nepali. In this reading session, the teacher-trainees read poetry and excerpts from the writing of famous authors and poets like Robert Louis Stevenson, Ramdhari Singh Dinkar, Rabindranath Tagore, Faiz Ahmad Faiz and many more. This was followed by an interactive literary quiz where various interesting questions related to the literary world were asked and the audience enthusiastically responded and won handmade book marks. Sr. Christine, Principal Loreto College, addressed the students and teachers with words of appreciation and encouragement and shared how the reading of books in the college library has gone up after the pandemic, thus underlining how vital books have been as tools to combat isolation during the pandemic and how valuable they will always remain. The entire celebration enabled the students of Loreto College to understand that a paradise can be found among the pages of a book.
