The Department of Economics motivates students to pursue higher studies in Economics and to enable choices of suitable career options. Economics Honours has been offered since 2012. A good percentage of the students have attained first class in the University examination for three consecutive years. An annual journal ‘Reflections’ in which both students and faculty members contribute well- researched articles, presentation of papers in inter-college fests, state –level and national seminars on contemporary development issues in the perspective of Indian economy help students get a basic insight about the nature of development of the economy.
A Students’ Meet – ‘Ecolore’ 2014 included events like paper presentation, debate, essay-writing and poster-making and enabled students to critically analyse and compare West Bengal economy. An international seminar during 2015-2016 is being planned. Students are helped to carry out research activities in a small way; the publications of student’s paper are included in a book with an ISBN number. Training to students in various software like SPSS, Statistica, E-Views to help students in research work is in the pipeline.
