Navigating Your Career Paths

On November 6, 2024, the Placement Cell of Loreto College, Kolkata organised an insightful event titled “Navigating Your Career Paths.” Mr. Krishnendu Banerjee, Officer of Placement and Training at the University of Calcutta, aimed to equip students with essential knowledge and strategies for their professional journeys through his presentation.

Mr. Banerjee commenced by defining the term “career,” emphasising how it encompasses more than just a job, representing instead a long-term professional journey aligned with personal aspirations. He highlighted the necessity of career counselling, noting that it helps individuals identify their strengths and make informed decisions about their career paths.

A significant portion of the discussion focused on the importance of work-life balance. Mr. Banerjee explained that maintaining this balance is crucial for sustaining productivity and preventing burnout, ultimately leading to greater job satisfaction and overall well-being. He encouraged students to engage in design thinking, a creative approach to problem-solving that can enhance their employability.

Mr. Banerjee also outlined various employment avenues, including on-campus and off-campus jobs. He elaborated on how companies hire candidates through diverse methods such as contests, aptitude tests, hackathons, group discussions, and interviews. This information was particularly beneficial for students preparing to enter the workforce.

He stressed the importance of skill development, urging attendees to focus on acquiring innovative skills that can set them apart in a competitive job market. Mr. Banerjee advised students to aim to become “offer seekers” rather than merely “job seekers,” encouraging a proactive approach to career advancement.

The programme concluded with an interactive questionnaire round, allowing students to clarify their doubts. A heartfelt vote of thanks acknowledged Mr. Banerjee’s valuable insights and contributions to the students’ career development journey.
