Alumnae Lecture Series



The Department of Geography, Loreto College, Kolkata organised the annual Alumnae Lecture Series in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) on May 15, 2024. The resource person for the first lecture titled “Negotiating Patriarchies: Cultural Realities of Doing Fieldwork in West Bengal, India” was Dr. Sayoni Bose, Associate Professor, Governors State University, College of Arts and Sciences, Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A. Dr. Bose discussed the challenges she faced as a native postcolonial feminist scholar and the strategies she deployed to negotiate patriarchal, cultural, and institutional structures while conducting research in the Global South.

The resource person for the second lecture titled “Can geographers change the world?” was Ms. Sayantoni Datta, Founder Director, Jaladarsha Collective and Eco Hive Foundation, Kolkata. Ms. Datta’s presentation focused on the practitioner approach to social issues. She highlighted the ways in which geographic tools have facilitated her work and encouraged the students to think about the applied aspects of the discipline.
