The second year students of the English Department of Loreto College visited the South
Park Street Cemetery on 19 February 2020. This was an attempt to complement the
students' understanding of Graveyard Poetry which is part of the syllabus. The
enthusiastic crowd of 32 students was led by two teachers. A detailed study of the
place, its architecture, it's connection with the contemporary English discourses and the
colonial past helped the students gain a deeper understanding of literature in relation to
society. The visit ended with a reading of poems by Thomas Gray and Jayanta
Mahapatra. The students were also encouraged to write short poems drawing
inspiration from this visit.
