On December 17, 2024, the Research Cell of Loreto College, Kolkata, in collaboration with the Department of English, organised a research methodology workshop for the undergraduate Semester III students of English. It was conducted by Dr. Debapriya Basu, Associate Professor in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati.

Dr. Basu commenced the session by introducing key terms in research methodology and focusing on the fundamentals of hermeneutics, analysis, and interpretation. She emphasised the various types of research, delineating the distinctions between quantitative and qualitative research. This comparative framework provided clarity on their respective applications and significance in the field of humanities and social sciences.

The workshop further delved into the preliminary steps involved in conducting research. Dr. Basu meticulously explained essential components such as hypothesis formation, identifying research gaps, framing research questions and objectives, reviewing relevant scholarship, choosing appropriate methodologies, and drawing conclusions. She also provided a curated list of key academic resources to aid students in their research journey. These resources were described as indispensable tools for conducting rigorous scholarly work.

The session became interactive and creative as students participated in group activities. Each group was tasked with formulating research questions based on their chosen author, theme, or period. This exercise not only reinforced the concepts discussed but also encouraged critical thinking and collaborative learning.

The workshop was marked by its insightful content, innovative approach, and dynamic engagement. Dr. Basu's expertise and her methodical delivery of complex ideas inspired the participants to approach research with clarity and confidence. The session proved to be an invaluable learning experience, leaving the students better equipped to navigate the challenges of academic research.
