Workshop on Research Methodology for Semester III Students of Economics

A one-day workshop titled "Getting Hands-On with Data Using Power Query and Power BI" was held on January 16, 2025 at Loreto College, Kolkata. The workshop was organised by the Loreto College Research Cell in collaboration with the Department of Economics, under the guidance of UGBoS Economics, University of Calcutta. Its primary aim was to equip Semester III students of Economics (Major) with practical skills in data analysis and visualisation tools, essential for both academic and real-world applications.

The event began with a welcome address by Dr. Mainak Bhattacharjee, Faculty, Department of Economics, who set the tone for an engaging and insightful session. This was followed by a note of introduction on the chief guest, Prof. (Dr.) Sudakshina Gupta, Chairman, Undergraduate Board of Studies (UGBoS), Department of Economics, University of Calcutta, and the resource person, Dr. Shirsendu Mukherjee, Associate Professor, Department of Economics, St. Paul's Cathedral Mission College, Kolkata & Member of Undergraduate Board of Studies (UGBoS), by Mr. Nilavo Roy, Faculty, Department of Economics.

The workshop was divided into two segments. The first half consisted of a theoretical orientation, where participants were introduced to the fundamental concepts and principles of data analysis using Power Query and Power BI. The second half was a practical, hands-on segment, providing attendees the opportunity to apply their newfound knowledge in real-time, fostering a deeper comprehension of the tools.

Dr. Mukherjee's guidance was truly invaluable, offering an engaging and hands-on learning experience. His expertise in Power Query and Power BI allowed participants to gain a deeper understanding of the tools, with practical sessions that made the learning process interactive and insightful.

Students from other colleges participated alongside Loreto College students, contributing to a vibrant and enriching learning environment. Overall, the workshop was enormously beneficial and inspiring for all attendees, as they could gather much knowledge, both theoretical and practical, on state-of-art techniques of data management and analysis.
