Launch of Certificate Course on AI / ML and Data Analytics
Certificate Course- Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning and Data Analytics: Theory into Practice in Disaster Management
There is an upward global trend in natural disaster occurrence over the last few decades and almost all countries face increased risk from disasters which have adverse impacts on humanity and environment. Dr. Sushma Sahai, Head of the Department of Geography, in her introductory address highlighted that increased vulnerability requires disaster management to be at the heart of economic and social development policy of disaster-prone countries. She emphasized that it is an important part of SDGs and UNESCO is also closely involved in improving education and public awareness.
Considering research, innovation, and capacity building as crucial factors to mitigate the future risk of natural hazards, Loreto College, Kolkata, launched a 42 hour Hybrid Certificate Course on Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning and Data Analytics: Theory into Practice in Disaster Management in collaboration with Keio University, Japan, IIT Roorkee and RIKA Institute on September 27, 2024.
Learning Objectives
I. To gain theoretical understanding of Disaster Management, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and their real world applications
II. Hands-on experience in open street mapping and basic coding
III. Hands-on application of learned lessons in developing solutions
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course the participants would;
I. Be equipped with knowledge of applying AI and data analytics to real-world disaster management and climate change scenarios
II. Gain theoretical and hands-on experience and become industry-ready
III. Competent with practical hands-on experience with leveraging cutting-edge technology for effective disaster risk management
The following collaborators addressed the participants.
Prof. Rajib Shaw, Graduate School of Media and Governance, Keio University, Japan, Co-chair of the Asia Science Technology Academic Advisory Group; and Coordinating Lead Author for the IPCC 6th Assessment Report emphasized on the need of using technology for disaster management.
Dr. Ranit Chatterjee co-founder of RIKA and visiting associate professor at Keio University in Japan, spoke on the significance disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation.
Prof. Sudip Roy, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Roorkee, India. emphasized on the need of computer-aided-design for digital systems, optimization techniques, internet of things (IoTs), application of machine learning and artificial intelligence.
Krishnakali Ghosh, Program Manager at RIKA, highlighted the role of GIS in disaster management.
This course designed for participants across all disciplines, attracted 80 students not only from Loreto College but also from colleges with whom it has Memorandum of Understanding both in Kolkata and other cities.
