Unveiling of the Portrait of Mother Gonzaga Joynt



On 1st of February 2016, the eve of Foundation Day, Loreto College added a new leaf to its illustrious history. A large portrait of Mother Gonzaga Joynt (1838-1928), Founder of Loreto College, was formally unveiled in the presence of sisters, students and teachers. One of the first Indian-born Loreto nuns, Mother Gonzaga established the Loreto College in 1912.

The portrait of the ‘Little Mother’ was unveiled by Sisters Mary DeSouza and Eithne, ibvm. Dr. Mridula Kapoor, shared reflections on the life and mission of Mother Gonzaga with reverence, observed how her ideals about education for women and her life continue to be a source of inspiration for all.

The second Provincial of the Indian Province, Mother Gonzaga oversaw the establishment of new missions in Ranchi, Morapai, Shillong and St. Mary’s Entally. She is best remembered for her foresight in advancing women’s education in India. It was an unforgettable experience all who witnessed history in the making!
