ONE BILLION RISING
On 14 February 2017, Loreto College was honored to receive Ms. Kamla Bhasin, a noted developmental feminist. Ms. Bhasin is associated with an NGO SANGAT (South Asian Network of Gender Activists and Trainers). She is also the South Asia Co-ordinator of One Billion Rising. One Billion Rising is a Global Campaign to end violence against women and girls. Ms. Bhasin was invited to deliver a speech about her on-going campaign and to throw light on a very pertinent issue – what is feminism, what struggle a woman faces (and it starts from household) to what each woman should and must do to assert themselves are equal beings with men in society.
The programme began by felicitating Ms.Kamla Bhasin. Ms.Bhasin spoke mostly about feminism. She firmly believes feminism is not a war between men and women but a fight between two ideologies. She further threw light about One Billion Rising Campaign. She explained that one billion women in world face discrimination or subjected to violence. So, the campaign stands in solidarity with such women and put an end to discrimination. She sang songs for students which had a strong undercurrent tone to end patriarchy. Ms.Bhasin delivered an electrifying speech on women’s rights and also gave insight on struggles a woman undergoes (mostly ‘household war’). Later, in the evening Loreto College extended its solidarity support to Ms.Bhasin campaign “One Billion Rising”. Both students and faculty members participated in campaign. Indeed, it was an unforgettable day!
