Geography Department Students’ Participation at International Conference, Jadavpur University
A group of students from the Geography Department of Loreto College, Kolkata attended the 6th International Conference on Solid Waste Management 2016 held from the 24th to the 26th of November, 2016 at Jadavpur University. The International conference was attended by 475 delegates from over 27 countries, presenting 280 full papers on solid waste management a plaguing issue prevalent all over the world.
The first day witnessed various technical sessions with topics ranging from solid waste management in the Asia-Pacific region to policies and strategies related to solid waste management to Bio-mass and bio-waste utilization. The session on the “Swachh Bharat Mission” was a popular one. Papers on its implementation, performance and changes required in the policy, proved to be an eye opener. A session was also held in the local language- Bengali especially for the scholars from Bangladesh as well as Kolkata. Dignitaries from various European countries including Italy, Portugal and Netherland spoke about the programs adopted in their respective countries. The third day began with a plenary session chaired by Prof. S.T Sheltaway of Egypt. A paper on the “A pilot project to deal with the festival waste in Bangalore” proved to be an inspiration to us as it provided with viable simple solutions to deal with the waste generated during the Durga-pujas in Kolkata. The three-day conference proved to be an enlightening experience for us!
